Disinherited son of an oil magnate who hides on a Chinese hillside trying to save a dying species of swallow — and who, after meeting Wenjie in 1977, will pour his fortune into the ETO and the ship Judgment Day.
Mike Evans hates humanity with a clarity that comes only from having grown up rich enough to see the whole machine. His father owns the largest private oil company on Earth; Mike has watched what that company does to coastlines and forests his entire life. He believes humans are a cancer, that all species are morally equivalent ('Pan-Species Communism' is the phrase he coins), and that the only solution is from outside. When Wenjie tells him about the signal she sent and the answer she received, he does not flinch. He becomes the operational and financial spine of the ETO. He buys an oil tanker, renames it the Judgment Day, and turns it into a floating temple where messages from Trisolaris are received and transcribed. He is a charismatic recluse who can address a thousand cult members and mean every word. He is also, secretly, lying about his ongoing communication with Trisolaris — they cut him off when they realized humans could lie. He never tells the ETO that.
Tall, gaunt American in his thirties when Wenjie first meets him, sun-bleached hair, the deep-tanned face of a man who lives outdoors on principle. Worn khakis and a faded shirt. By the time of the present-day plot he is older, grayer, and dressed in plain dark clothing that disappears into the steel corridors of the Judgment Day.
