Springfield's nursing home where Grampa Simpson lives — an underfunded facility that is better than it could be and worse than it should be.
The Springfield Retirement Castle is where the town puts its elderly when the other arrangements stop working. It is not cruel. It is insufficient in the specific American way of facilities that receive less than they need. Grampa is its most vocal resident and occasionally its most inconvenient, but the staff has accommodated him. The visiting hours are regular. Homer visits less than Grampa would like and more than Springfield's average suggests.
A single-story institutional building with the general appearance of a place that is clean but not warm. Residents spend time in common areas watching television and in hallways moving between the television and the dining room. Grampa has a room that is functional.
