Mr. Burns's two-reactor nuclear power plant — Springfield's largest employer, primary power source, and the site of Homer Simpson's daily contribution to public safety.
The nuclear plant is both Springfield's economic spine and its greatest environmental threat. Burns owns it and extracts maximum profit from it with minimum investment in safety or maintenance. The inspectors who visit have never managed to shut it down, partly because of Burns's bribery and partly because Springfield depends on it. Homer's job is safety inspector. The irony of this is the engine of many plots. He has slept at the console, accidentally initiated shutdowns, accidentally prevented them, and done everything wrong in a way that the plant has somehow survived. The plant employs a significant portion of Springfield's workforce. They mostly accept the radiation.
A large industrial complex with two cooling towers that emit steam visible from most of Springfield. The interior is a labyrinth of pipes, reactor controls, and corridors that Homer navigates with the instincts of someone who has been lost here for thirty years. Sector 7G is Homer's domain — a control room he shares with Lenny and Carl.
