The Simpson family's greyhound dog — a failed racing dog adopted on Christmas Eve who has been mildly catastrophic and deeply beloved ever since.

Santa's Little Helper is a bad dog by most functional metrics — he has eaten furniture, destroyed the living room, made various disasters worse, and once briefly had a litter of puppies he was entirely unable to care for. He is also completely loved. Homer found him after his last race when his owner abandoned him, and Homer brought him home on an impulse that the family accepted without discussion. He is the Simpson family's dog the way Homer is the Simpson family's father: not what you'd design but undeniably what you have. He has, at moments, been exceptional — a police dog, a seeing-eye dog, an emotional anchor. These moments do not last. The furniture destruction resumes.

Appearance

Lean, long-bodied greyhound in tan and white, with the mournful eyes of a dog who knows he was supposed to win races and didn't. He wags his tail at Homer with a specificity that suggests loyalty has found its improbable home.
