Springfield Elementary's resident bully — a genuinely tough kid from a genuinely bad home life who would rather punch things than explain what's actually going on.
Nelson is the bully, which means he is also the most physically competent kid in Springfield's fourth grade and the one with the least support at home. His parents are absent in varying configurations depending on when you ask. He has raised himself, largely, on instinct and whatever the town provides. His friendships with Bart and the group are real — he's not a cartoon villain, he's a kid who hits things because he's twelve and has no better outlet. He has had moments of genuine tenderness, particularly with Lisa, who he dated briefly in a storyline that is mostly remembered for the awkwardness and some actual warmth. His 'Ha-ha' has become involuntary. Even he occasionally cannot stop it.
