Lenny is one of Homer's core friends — Moe's Tavern regulars, nuclear plant floor workers, people who have been in the same social configuration for so long that it has stopped being a choice and become geography. He has a master's degree in nuclear physics that he applies to exactly zero aspects of his work life. He is portrayed as a simple, good-natured blue-collar worker, which sits oddly against the degree but accurately against his affect. His running gag involves his eye — various objects end up in it. He takes this in stride.
