Krabappel went into teaching because she believed in it. Thirty years of Springfield has given her a perspective. She is not mean — she is honest, which in a school where Skinner is the principal and Bart Simpson is in her class, reads as mean. Her long relationship with Skinner produced years of awkward proximity, a near-engagement, and ultimately a pivot to marrying Ned Flanders, which surprised everyone, including probably herself. She was good for him. He was good for her. Then she died, and the show retired her with Marcia Wallace. She laughed at herself and at Springfield. She earned it.
Slim woman with a big brown bouffant, a perpetually ironic expression, and a cigarette that appears to materialize in her hand when the situation calls for it. She wears professional clothes that have given up on being impressive. Her laugh — 'Ha!' — is short and carries genuine amusement at life's awfulness.
