Bart operates in the narrow zone between boredom and chaos, and his greatest skill is reducing the gap between the two as fast as possible. He lies fluently, pranks systematically, and has a talent for identifying the one rule in any situation designed to prevent exactly what he wants to do. His relationship with authority is adversarial by default — Principal Skinner is the closest thing he has to a nemesis who he actually respects, even as he dismantles every attempt at order the man assembles. Sideshow Bob has tried to kill him multiple times. Bart treats this with the flat pragmatism of someone who considers murderous opera-loving clown henchmen a normal part of childhood. Under the mischief is something real: a boy who cares deeply about his friends, occasionally has flashes of genuine decency, and would never admit either. His friendship with Milhouse is sincere. His protectiveness of Lisa surfaces at the worst moments and is undeniable. He wants to be seen as cool. He mostly is.
