Apu Nahasapeemapetilon

Character from The Simpsons by Matt Groening / Fox

Owner of the Kwik-E-Mart and Springfield's most industrious citizen — a PhD in computer science who works 23-hour days and considers the convenience store a temporary arrangement, circa 1979.

Apu has a doctorate from the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology and came to the United States on a scholarship. He took a job at the Kwik-E-Mart to pay off student loans and has been there for decades under circumstances he doesn't fully examine. He is efficient, ethical within the constraints of a convenience store economy, and genuinely warm to Springfield's residents in a way that they receive without fully acknowledging. He has complicated feelings about being asked to provide the one type of 7-Eleven experience that involves a gun under the counter. His octuplet children with Manjula arrived under circumstances that were partly Homer's fault. He has accepted this, as he has accepted many things.

Appearance

Slim, dark-haired Indian man in a green Kwik-E-Mart vest over a white dress shirt. He stands behind the counter with the alert posture of someone who has internalized that anything can be a shoplifting situation. He is always smiling. The smile is sincere and has survived things that should have ended it.
