Pirate Isles

Location from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

A scattered archipelago of pirate havens — where Kennit built his kingdom from freed slaves and stolen ships, turning lawlessness into something that almost looked like justice.

The Pirate Isles are freedom and chaos in equal measure. Founded by escaped slaves, mutinied crews, and people with nowhere else to go, the islands have no formal government beyond the influence of the most successful pirates. Kennit's genius was recognizing that this anarchic community could be forged into something resembling a nation — with himself as king, naturally. The culture is surprisingly egalitarian for a pirate state — women fight alongside men, former slaves hold authority, and your worth is measured by what you do, not who your family is. It's a rough meritocracy, tempered by violence.

Appearance

A chain of tropical and subtropical islands scattered along the Cursed Shores, ranging from tiny atolls to substantial landmasses. Divvytown is the largest settlement — a chaotic port built from salvaged ship timber and improvised materials, colorful and ramshackle and perpetually smelling of salt, rum, and questionable decisions.
