Jamaillia

Location from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

A southern empire ruled by a dissolute Satrap — wealthy, corrupt, and constantly meddling in Bingtown's affairs while pretending to be its protector.

Jamaillia is the aging empire that claims sovereignty over Bingtown and the Rain Wild Traders while providing nothing in return except taxes and interference. The Satrap is a puppet — a dissolute young man manipulated by advisors and foreign interests. The empire's culture prizes elegance, luxury, and a sophisticated cruelty that the blunter Six Duchies would find baffling. Jamaillian influence extends through Regal's mother's bloodline into Six Duchies politics, and through trade into Bingtown. They are the cultural template that the New Traders aspire to.

Appearance

A warm, wealthy empire with architecture that favors grandeur — domed palaces, marble colonnades, and elaborate gardens. The capital, Jamaillia City, gleams with the accumulated wealth of centuries of trade. The Satrap's palace is a monument to excess.
