Location from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb
A militaristic slave state south of the Six Duchies — ruled by a Duke obsessed with immortality, culturally brutal, and perpetually threatening its neighbors.
Chalced is what happens when a culture decides that might makes right and spends centuries refining the principle. Slavery is the economic foundation, military conquest is the political philosophy, and the Duke's word is absolute law. The culture values physical strength, martial prowess, and obedience — qualities that make it an effective war machine and a terrible place to live. The Duke of Chalced's obsession with dragon parts as the key to immortality drives much of the later-series conflict, as Chalcedean agents hunt dragons and Elderlings for their body parts.
A large nation south of the Six Duchies with a warm, dry climate. The architecture is imposing — massive stone fortifications, slave-built monuments, and a capital that gleams with stolen wealth. The landscape runs from coastal plains to arid interior, and the roads are maintained by slave labor.
