Selden Vestrit

Character from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

The youngest Vestrit — marked by dragons from childhood, traded as a curiosity, and eventually transformed into a true Elderling whose humanity bridges the gap between scales and skin.

Selden was the Vestrit child nobody worried about — too young to inherit, too gentle to fight, easily overlooked. Dragon contact changed him, first subtly and then dramatically, and his Elderling transformation made him both valuable and vulnerable. Chalced captured and displayed him as an exotic; his family fought to get him back. His connection to dragons is genuine and deep — he understands them emotionally in a way that even other Elderlings don't, making him an essential bridge between the species.

Appearance

Selden's Elderling transformation is the most advanced of any human character. His skin is scaled in patterns of copper and blue, his eyes have a reptilian cast, and his features have elongated into something beautiful and inhuman. He is unmistakably no longer entirely human.
