Captain Leftrin

Character from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

Captain of the liveship barge Tarman — a rough, honest Rain Wild riverman who fell in love with a Bingtown scholar and captained the expedition that changed the world.

Leftrin is straightforward in a way that is genuinely refreshing in Hobb's world of political complexity. He says what he means, does what he says, and loves Alise with the uncomplicated devotion of a man who knows exactly what he wants. His relationship with Tarman is one of the saga's quieter bonds — a captain and his ship who have known each other so long that the line between them has blurred. He leads the dragon keeper expedition up the Rain Wild River because someone has to, and his practical competence keeps the whole enterprise from collapsing into disaster. He is not a hero in the traditional sense — he's a working man doing a job — which makes him one of the most reliable characters in the series.

Appearance

Stocky and weathered with the slightly changed features of a Rain Wilder — not dramatically marked, but enough to set him apart from a mainlander. He dresses for work on the river, not for show, and his hands are as much a part of Tarman as the tiller.
