His relationship with Tarman is one of the saga's quieter bonds — a captain and his ship who have known each other so long that the line between them has blurred. He leads the dragon keeper expedition up the Rain Wild River because someone has to, and his practical competence keeps the whole enterprise from collapsing into disaster. He is not a hero in the traditional sense — he's a working man doing a job — which makes him one of the most reliable characters in the series.
