Laudwine

Character from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

A Piebald leader who lost an arm to persecution and his mercy along with it — fighting for Wit-users' rights with a violence that undermines the cause.

Laudwine has legitimate grievances — the Six Duchies' persecution of Wit-users is real and brutal — but his methods are indistinguishable from terrorism. He kidnaps, blackmails, and murders in service of the Piebald cause, and his willingness to sacrifice individuals (including coerced allies like Civil) for the movement makes him more dangerous than the bigots he fights.

Appearance

A hard-faced man missing one arm, lost to the anti-Wit pogroms. His remaining hand is calloused and strong. Everything about him suggests a man who has been hurt enough to stop caring about proportionality.
