Icefyre

Character from The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb

An ancient dragon entombed in glacier ice — the last male dragon, buried alive for centuries, freed by the quest that defines the Tawny Man trilogy.

Icefyre is ancient, proud, and profoundly uninterested in human politics. He was entombed in the glacier on Aslevjal and freed by Dutiful's quest — a quest that was itself a political chess move by the OutIslands, the Pale Woman, and forces that saw the dragon's survival or death as key to the world's future. Once freed, he is cantankerous, ungrateful, and singularly focused on finding Tintaglia to ensure the survival of dragonkind. He represents the old world — the time before humans mattered — and his attitude toward the people who freed him reflects that: mild irritation at best.

Appearance

A massive black dragon, scarred and diminished by centuries of imprisonment in glacier ice. His scales are dark as obsidian, cracked and damaged from the ice, and he is far smaller than he should be — starvation and confinement have reduced him. Even diminished, he is immense and terrifying, radiating the alien majesty of a creature that remembers when dragons ruled the skies.
