Item from The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir
The vengeful ghosts of the planets John destroyed to build the Nine Houses — cosmic horrors that hunt the Dominicus system, each one capable of annihilating everything the Emperor created.
Resurrection Beasts are the consequences John refuses to face. He destroyed multiple inhabited planets to fuel the Resurrection — the act that created the Nine Houses and the sun Dominicus. The souls of those planets became Resurrection Beasts: cosmic revenants that hunt the system's borders, waiting for the chance to destroy what was built from their corpses. Lyctors are the only defense against them. Fighting a Resurrection Beast is a near-suicide mission even for an immortal — the cosmic scale of these entities makes even ten-thousand-year-old necromancers look fragile. The Lyctors take turns standing watch aboard the Mithraeum, waiting for the next one to arrive. The deeper horror is that the Resurrection Beasts are RIGHT. Their worlds were murdered. Their anger is justified. The Nine Houses are built on genocide, and the Beasts are the victims who refused to stay dead.
Vast, alien, and incomprehensible — each Resurrection Beast is the revenant of an entire planet, manifesting as cosmic entities of impossible scale. They approach from beyond the system's borders, drawn by the thanergetic signature of Lyctors. Each one is different, each one is devastating, and each one remembers what was done to the world it used to be.
