Wake is the series' ghost — literally and figuratively. She was a Blood of Eden operative who infiltrated the Emperor's inner circle, conceived Gideon with John while he believed she was in cryo-stasis, and died attempting to assassinate him. Her ghost continued haunting a sword, influencing events from beyond death with the same relentless determination she showed in life. She is Gideon's mother, which Gideon did not know for most of the series. The Blood of Eden reveres her as a martyr. John remembers her as one of the few people who genuinely got under his skin. She represents everything the resistance stands for: the belief that the Nine Houses are built on a lie, and that the man who calls himself God is just a murderer with good branding.
Red-haired, fierce-featured, and carrying herself with the coiled intensity of a guerrilla fighter who has been at war her entire life. Gideon inherited her coloring and her stubborn refusal to die quietly.
