Character from The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir
The caretaker of Canaan House — a smiling, two-handed-waving guide who welcomed the postulants to their deaths with the cheerfulness of a camp counselor at the world's worst summer camp.
Teacher is unsettling in the way that only genuine, sustained cheerfulness can be in a horror setting. He greets the postulants, assigns their quarters, explains the rules (there are almost no rules), and then retreats into the background while people start dying. His smile never wavers. His helpfulness never extends to the specific information that would save anyone's life. Whether Teacher is oblivious, complicit, or something else entirely is one of Canaan House's many unanswered questions. He represents the institutional rot of the First House — a system that sends its brightest young people to die and assigns a man with a nice smile to watch.
A middle-aged man with an aggressively pleasant demeanor, perpetually smiling, and waving with both hands in a way that seems practiced rather than natural. Wears simple robes and carries himself with the energy of someone hosting a party where several guests will be murdered.
