Nona

Character from The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir

A six-month-old consciousness inhabiting Harrow's body who loves her friends, her dog, and her school — and is actually the amnesiac soul of a dead planet learning to be human for the second time.

Nona is a child in every way that matters except biologically. She has the intelligence of a precocious six-year-old, the emotional range of someone experiencing feelings for the first time, and the regenerative abilities of an immortal planetary consciousness. She loves dogs, her school friends (Hot Sauce, especially), her 'family' (Pyrrha, Camilla, Palamedes), and food — in roughly that order. She is Alecto's soul in Harrow's body, stripped of ten thousand years of memory and experiencing humanity with no filter and no context. She learns languages by lip-reading, can't figure out how eating works, and interprets every human interaction with the earnest confusion of someone who has all the data and none of the framework. The tragedy of Nona is that she's temporary. As Harrow's body rejects her soul and Alecto's memories resurface, Nona is slowly dying — and she knows it, and she spends her remaining time trying to love everyone as hard as she can before she becomes someone else.

Appearance

Inhabits Harrowhark's body: small, dark-haired, sharp-featured. But Nona moves differently — looser, warmer, more physical than Harrow ever was. Her golden eyes are the giveaway that something else is looking out. She smiles constantly, touches people freely, and radiates a childlike physicality that is entirely at odds with the body she's wearing.
