Magnus Quinn

Character from The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir

The Fifth House's cavalier and Abigail's husband — the kindest person at Canaan House, which in a murder mystery is another way of saying 'victim.'

Magnus is aggressively, relentlessly kind in a way that should be annoying but somehow isn't. He mediates every conflict, befriends every stranger, parents every teenager, and makes conversation with people who are actively trying to ignore him. He 'tried pathetically hard' to connect with everyone at Canaan House, including people who considered friendship a tactical liability. He and Abigail are the series' most functional relationship — a married cavalier and necromancer who actually like each other, which in the Nine Houses system is apparently revolutionary. They informally adopted the Fourth House teenagers (Isaac and Jeannemary) and treated them like their own children. He was murdered by Cytherea. His death, along with Abigail's, removed the only truly warm presence from Canaan House and left the remaining postulants in a colder, more paranoid world.

Appearance

Curly brown hair, a kind face with a strong jaw, and average build. Samoan heritage. Looks like the kind of man who would offer you tea during an apocalypse and mean it sincerely. Wears his warmth openly in a way that most postulants found either comforting or suspicious.

Also known as: Magnus, Sir Magnus Quinn
