Lynel

Character from The Legend of Zelda by Nintendo

Hyrule's apex predator — a centaur-like beast that is harder to kill than most bosses and has traumatized more players than Ganondorf ever did.

Lynels are not bosses. They are field enemies. They roam Hyrule's plateaus and mountains as open-world encounters, and they are harder to kill than many actual boss fights. A Silver Lynel in BotW has over 2,000 HP, charges with the speed of a horse, shoots fire breath, and creates devastating shockwaves. They are the game's most feared non-boss enemy, and the first time a player stumbles into one on the Great Plateau or Polymus Mountain is a formative gaming experience. Fighting a Lynel is a rite of passage. Killing one is a badge of honor.

Appearance

Centaur-like body — humanoid upper half with a lion's mane and face, horse-like lower body. Comes in multiple tiers: Red, Blue, White, Silver, and Gloom varieties, each progressively more terrifying. Wields swords, spears, or crushers, and all variants carry bows that fire multiple arrows simultaneously.
