Salt Lake City

Location from The Last of Us by Naughty Dog

The Firefly stronghold — where the vaccine was going to be made, where Joel chose Ellie over humanity, and where the entire series' moral question was answered with a gun.

Salt Lake City is the destination of Part I — the place Joel has spent the entire game trying to reach to deliver Ellie to the Fireflies. The giraffe scene — Joel and Ellie watching giraffes in the ruined city — is the game's most peaceful moment, coming immediately before its most violent. St. Mary's Hospital is where Jerry was going to operate. Where Marlene made the decision. Where Joel killed everyone. The operating room, the parking garage, the loading dock where Joel carries unconscious Ellie to the car — these are the most important rooms in the franchise.

Appearance

An overgrown city with a Firefly-occupied hospital (St. Mary's) serving as the central location. The approach is beautiful — green, sunlit, with giraffes (escaped from the zoo) grazing in the overgrown streets. The hospital itself is clinical and functional, maintained by the Fireflies for their research.
