One of the last FEDRA-controlled zones — a walled section of Boston where martial law, ration lines, and smuggling are the only things that work.
The Boston QZ is where the story begins — a twenty-year-old military zone that has devolved from emergency shelter into permanent occupation. FEDRA controls it with soldiers, curfews, and public executions. The Fireflies resist. The smugglers profit. The civilians endure. The zone smells like mildew and overcrowding. The ration lines are long. The power goes out regularly. The checkpoints are staffed by soldiers who are either corrupt or cruel, sometimes both. Outside the walls, the city is reclaimed by nature: trees growing through buildings, infected roaming the subway tunnels, and a silence that's more unnerving than any growl.
A militarized section of Boston surrounded by concrete barriers and razor wire. The buildings are intact but decrepit — everything is maintained at 'functional' rather than 'livable.' FEDRA checkpoints divide the zone into sectors. The outer ring (where Joel and Tess live) is rougher — closer to the wall, closer to the smuggling routes, closer to the infected. The inner sectors are marginally better. Nothing is good.
