Clicker

Item from The Last of Us by Naughty Dog

The series' most iconic infected — blind, armored in fungal plates, hunting by echolocation, and killing with one bite. The clicking sound is the last thing most survivors hear.

Clickers are the middle stage of Cordyceps infection — months to years after initial infection, the fungus has consumed the host's face and eyes, replacing sight with echolocation. They click constantly, the sound bouncing off surfaces to map their environment. They are blind but can detect movement through sound with terrifying precision. One bite from a Clicker is fatal (for everyone except Ellie). Their fungal armor makes them resistant to melee attacks — you need a blade or significant force to get through the plates. They are the series' most memorable enemy because the clicking is viscerally scary: you hear them before you see them, and hearing them means they're already hunting.

Appearance

A human body overtaken by fungal growth — the face is completely obscured by plates of Cordyceps that have burst through the skull, forming a grotesque flower-like mass. No eyes. No recognizable features. The mouth is a jagged opening in the fungal mass. They move with jerky, searching motions, heads tilted, constantly clicking to echolocate.
