Sam

Character from The Last of Us by Naughty Dog

Henry's deaf little brother — a child who showed Ellie her worst fear: that the infection could take someone right next to you overnight, and immunity doesn't transfer through friendship.

Sam bonded with Ellie over superhero comics and the kind of play that children default to even in apocalypses. He was bitten during the escape from Pittsburgh/Kansas City, hid it from everyone, and turned overnight. Ellie woke up to him attacking her. Henry shot him. Then Henry shot himself. Sam's turn is the moment Ellie learns that her immunity is personal — it can't save anyone else. It's the foundation of her survivor's guilt.

Appearance

A small boy — around ten — with dark skin and large, expressive eyes. He uses a whiteboard and ASL to communicate (deaf in the HBO version). He carries a superhero toy and has the wide-eyed watchfulness of a child who has seen too much.
