Owen is Abby's emotional counterweight — the person who questions whether revenge and war are worth the cost when the person you're becoming is someone you don't recognize. He served with the WLF but grew disillusioned with Isaac's increasingly authoritarian leadership. His plan to find the Firefly remnant in Santa Barbara represents the possibility of something better. His death — killed by Ellie during the marina confrontation, alongside pregnant Mel — is one of Part II's most morally devastating sequences because Ellie didn't know Mel was pregnant. Owen died trying to protect her.
