Fireflies

Character from The Last of Us by Naughty Dog

The resistance — a rebel militia fighting FEDRA's military rule across America, seeking a cure for Cordyceps and willing to sacrifice anything to get it, including a fourteen-year-old girl.

The Fireflies are the series' moral gray zone. They fight FEDRA's authoritarian rule, which is noble. They were going to kill a child to make a vaccine, which is monstrous. They might have saved humanity if Joel hadn't stopped them. They definitely would have killed Ellie. Led by Marlene, they operated cells across the country — Boston, Salt Lake City, and eventually a remnant on Catalina Island. They attracted idealists (Tommy joined for a while) and martyrs (many died for the cause). The question of whether the vaccine would have worked — and whether killing Ellie was justified — is the moral fulcrum of the entire franchise.

Appearance

They wear civilian clothes with Firefly insignia — a stylized insect pendant worn as necklace or pinned to clothing. Their graffiti (the same insect symbol) marks buildings and walls across quarantine zones. They look like civilians because they are — doctors, teachers, soldiers who chose rebellion.
