Ellie's mother — a Firefly who was bitten while giving birth, and whose connection to the Cordyceps at the moment of delivery may be the reason Ellie is immune.
Anna was a Firefly and Marlene's close friend who gave birth to Ellie while actively bitten by an infected. The theory (explored in the HBO series) is that the Cordyceps transferred through the umbilical cord at the moment of birth, creating the unique mutation that makes Ellie immune. She asked Marlene to take care of Ellie and to kill her before she turned. She is defined by what she gave Ellie: immunity, a switchblade, and the terrible gift of being the only person in the world who can't be infected by the thing that killed her mother.
In the HBO series: young, fierce, and visibly exhausted from labor while fighting infected. She carries a switchblade — the same one Ellie inherits. She looks like an older version of Ellie.
