Tarbean

Location from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The largest city in the Commonwealth — vast, filthy, and indifferent. Where Kvothe spent three years as a homeless child after his family was murdered by the Chandrian.

Tarbean is a city that eats people. Kvothe arrived as a traumatized boy of twelve, half-mad with grief, and the city stripped him down to animal survival — begging, stealing, sleeping in crawlspaces, learning to run before the older children caught him. He forgot his own name for a time. Trapis ran a basement shelter in the worst part of the Waterside where he fed orphans and told them stories of Tehlu, and it was one of the few places Kvothe found anything resembling kindness. The city taught Kvothe things the University never could: how to read a crowd, how to lie without flinching, how to endure. He left Tarbean the day he remembered who he was — and what he wanted to become.

Appearance

A sprawling port city of grey stone, timber tenements, and narrow alleys that reek of fish and sewage. The Waterside district crumbles toward the docks; the Hillside climbs toward wealth. Between them lies a maze of streets where children disappear and no one asks questions.
