Severen

Location from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The capital of Vintas, divided sharply between Severen-High where the nobility play their games and Severen-Low where everyone else survives. Seat of Maer Alveron.

Severen is a city of surfaces and what lies beneath them. In Severen-High, the Vintish court revolves around the Maer Alveron, and every conversation is a negotiation, every gift a gambit. Kvothe came here as a musician seeking patronage and found himself drawn into the Maer's confidence — curing his mysterious illness, courting Meluan Lackless on his behalf, and navigating a court where a wrong word could end a career or a life. Severen-Low hums with a different energy entirely — merchants, sailors, and thieves conducting honest business in their own fashion. The lifts between High and Low are the city's great metaphor: the distance between the two is not merely vertical.

Appearance

A grand city built on a dramatic escarpment. Severen-High perches above on the cliffs — marble halls, manicured gardens, and the Maer's estate. Severen-Low sprawls below in a dense, colorful tangle of markets, inns, and trade houses. A series of lifts connect the two levels.
