Myr Tariniel

Location from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The greatest of the ancient cities, once ruled by Selitos, destroyed by Lanre who became Haliax. Now lost to myth, its fall marks the origin of the Chandrian and the Amyr.

Myr Tariniel exists in that uncertain space between history and myth where the most important truths tend to live. According to Skarpi's story — and Skarpi's stories have a way of being more true than they should be — Myr Tariniel was the last of the great cities to fall during the Creation War. Lanre, once a hero, betrayed it after being broken by grief and something worse than grief. He opened the gates to destruction and burned it to ruin while Selitos watched. In his rage and sorrow, Selitos cursed Lanre — renaming him Haliax, binding him to his sign of shadow. From the ashes of Myr Tariniel came two things: the Chandrian, who serve Haliax, and the Amyr, who swore to oppose them. Whether the city was real, and whether the story is accurate, remain questions that have driven scholars and madmen in equal measure.

Appearance

In the stories, a city of white stone and high towers, built on a mountain and overlooking the world. Its beauty was said to be unmatched — a place where the air itself seemed to glow with a light that had no source. Now it is ash and legend, if it ever existed at all.
