The Fae

Location from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The otherworld that exists alongside the mortal realm, separated by thin places and old magic. Time moves strangely here, and its inhabitants are beautiful, dangerous, and very old.

The Fae is not a place humans are meant to visit, and those who stumble in rarely leave unchanged. The realm operates on its own logic — time flows differently, distances shift, and the inhabitants range from mischievous to lethal. Felurian dwells in the twilight side, impossibly beautiful and ancient beyond reckoning, and men who find her rarely survive the encounter with their minds intact. Kvothe did, barely, and earned the shaed she wove for him. Deeper in, on the midnight side, the Cthaeh sits in its tree — an oracle of perfect malice, seeing all futures and choosing words designed to cause maximum harm. The Sithe guard the tree to prevent anyone from carrying the Cthaeh's poison back to the mortal world. The Fae and mortal realms were once one, according to the oldest stories, separated by Iax who stole the moon.

Appearance

An impossibly vivid landscape divided between the twilight side and the midnight side. On the twilight side, everything glows with a perpetual golden dusk — the trees are too green, the flowers too bright, the air thick with the smell of growing things. The midnight side is shadow and starlight and things best left undescribed.

Also known as: the Fae, Fae realm, the Faen realm
