The Commonwealth

Location from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The largest and most powerful nation in the Four Corners of Civilization. A vast patchwork of cities, farmland, and forest where most of Kvothe's story takes place.

The Commonwealth is not so much a nation as an agreement — a loose confederation of cities, towns, and territories held together by trade, tradition, and the King's Road. The University sits near its heart, and Tarbean sprawls along its coast, but between the cities there are vast stretches of countryside where law thins and the old stories still have teeth. Bandits work the roads, tinkers carry their mysterious trades between villages, and the Edema Ruh travel in their troupes, welcomed and mistrusted in equal measure. It is a land that believes itself civilized and mostly is — but the forests are old, and the things that live in old forests do not care what men believe.

Appearance

Rolling farmland, dense forests like the Eld, river valleys, and scattered cities connected by trade roads of varying quality. The landscape is temperate and varied — green in summer, harsh in winter, and always wider than you think.
