Ademre

Location from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The isolated homeland of the Adem people, high in the Stormwal Mountains. A warrior culture of extraordinary discipline where silence speaks louder than words.

Ademre is a place that strips things to their essentials. The Adem do not use facial expressions to communicate — they consider it barbaric, the way outsiders let their feelings spill across their faces like animals. Instead, they speak with small, precise hand gestures while their voices remain flat and controlled. Music is considered deeply intimate, almost obscene. Their martial art, the Ketan, is a tradition of movements passed down through centuries, and the Adem mercenaries who sell their skills in the lowlands are among the most feared fighters in the world. Kvothe trained here under Vashet, and despite being an outsider — a barbarian by their standards — he earned the right to carry a sword. The Adem also preserve the Lethani, a philosophical path that defies easy explanation. It is not a code of rules but something closer to an instinct for rightness.

Appearance

A harsh, wind-scoured highland of grey stone, sparse grass, and constant gales. The settlements are built low and sturdy against the mountains, with training yards of packed earth where the Adem practice the Ketan. The sky is enormous and the wind never stops.
