Gram

Item from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

A protective amulet inscribed with sygaldric runes that defends the wearer against malfeasance — sympathetic attacks directed through a mommet or similar link. Essential for anyone with enemies who know sympathy.

A gram is the difference between sleeping soundly and waking up with your blood boiling in your veins. Sympathy can kill at a distance if the attacker has a good enough link to the target, and a gram disrupts that connection — absorbing or redirecting the hostile energy before it reaches the wearer. Kvothe built his own after Ambrose tried to kill him through malfeasance, and he also created one for the Maer Alveron. The device is not common because building one requires significant skill in sygaldry, but among those who understand sympathy, wearing a gram is as fundamental as locking your door at night.

Appearance

A small, flat piece of metal worn close to the skin, typically on a chain or leather cord. Its surface is covered in fine sygaldric inscriptions, the runes so small and precise they look almost like a decorative pattern to the untrained eye.
