Sovoy is a capable student from a wealthy Modegan family who courts Denna with sincere but ultimately insufficient devotion. He speaks with the polished manners of good breeding and treats Kvothe as a friend despite their rivalry for Denna's attention — a generosity that speaks well of his character if not his perceptiveness. He represents the type of man Denna could settle for but never will: kind, comfortable, and entirely unable to match the complexity that draws her to more dangerous company.
