Shehyn

Character from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The leader of the Adem school at Haert — ancient, formidable, and keeper of a story about the Chandrian that predates written history.

Shehyn speaks with the absolute authority of a woman who has earned every syllable of her position. She leads the school at Haert with a combination of martial supremacy and philosophical depth that makes questioning her decisions feel not just unwise but conceptually wrong. She tested Kvothe in the Lethani and found him acceptable — barely — and she told him the Adem story of the Chandrian, the oldest surviving account of their origins and their true names. This was not generosity but calculation: the Lethani demanded it. She speaks less than any Adem, which is saying something, and her silences carry more weight than most people's speeches.

Appearance

Old but unbowed, with the lean, hardened look of a woman who has spent a lifetime turning her body into a weapon and her will into steel. Her face is the stillest of any Adem — a mask of absolute control that reveals nothing she does not choose to show. Her movements, even in age, carry a lethal economy that younger warriors study and cannot replicate.
