Puppet

Character from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The Archives' strangest resident — a man who carves puppets, knows every book by heart, and sees patterns in knowledge that the masters cannot or will not perceive.

Puppet lives in the Archives and apparently never leaves. He carves small puppets with obsessive care and seems to know the contents of every book in the collection without needing to reference them. He speaks in a manner that oscillates between lucid insight and apparent madness, and his puppets occasionally act out scenes that relate to the conversation in ways that are either coincidental or deeply meaningful. Lorren tolerates his presence, which is itself remarkable and suggests that Puppet serves some function the Master Archivist considers essential. He may be a broken namer, like Auri, or something else entirely.

Appearance

Pale from a life lived entirely indoors, with bright, unsettling eyes and the distracted manner of a man whose attention is distributed across several layers of reality simultaneously. Surrounded by his carved puppets, which he manipulates with absent-minded precision while carrying on conversations. His workspace is a chaos of books and carvings that follows its own inscrutable logic.
