Master Kilvin

Character from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

A mountain of a man who forges knowledge into metal and light — Cealdish, meticulous, and fair, he runs the Artificery with the exacting standards of someone who knows that sloppy work kills.

Kilvin speaks with a Cealdish accent and the deliberate care of a man who means every word. He values craftsmanship, intellectual honesty, and the principle that the Arcanum's creations should help rather than harm. His rejection of ever-burning lamps is not stubbornness but philosophy — he has seen what happens when dangerous knowledge escapes the workshop. He is one of the few masters who treats Kvothe fairly from the start, judging him by his work rather than his reputation. In the Fishery, his word is absolute law, and students who violate safety protocols face his disappointment, which is worse than any punishment. He mentors with gruff patience, praises rarely, and when he does, it means something.

Appearance

Enormous — broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, with the build of a man who has spent decades working at forges. Dark Cealdish complexion, a great bristling beard, and hands like shovels that handle delicate sygaldry with surprising precision. He wears the leather apron of the Fishery like a second skin. His eyes are sharp and assessing behind the heat-shimmer of the workshop.
