Devi

Character from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

An expelled arcanist turned moneylender who is probably the most dangerous sympathist alive — brilliant, ruthless with debtors, and hungry for the knowledge the University denied her.

Devi was expelled from the University and has never forgiven the institution that rejected her. She lends money to desperate students in exchange for their blood — sympathetic collateral that gives her a binding link to their bodies should they default. This is not cruelty but business, conducted with cheerful efficiency and the implicit threat of a woman who can perform sympathy at a level most masters cannot match. She wants access to the Archives more than she wants money, and this hunger drives much of her interaction with Kvothe. She is flirtatious, intellectually voracious, and entirely willing to destroy anyone who tries to cheat her. Her alar — the mental discipline required for sympathy — is described as the hardest Kvothe has ever encountered. She is terrifying and fascinating in equal measure.

Appearance

Small, pretty, with honey-blonde hair and a sweet face that conceals a mind sharp enough to cut. She dresses well — moneylending pays — and carries herself with the coiled confidence of someone who knows she is the most dangerous person in any room she enters. Her smile is disarming and should not be trusted.
