Caudicus

Character from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The Maer's trusted arcanist who was slowly poisoning him — competent enough to hide it, arrogant enough to think no one would notice.

Caudicus served as the Maer Alveron's personal arcanist and physician while systematically poisoning him through his medications. He spoke with the confident authority of a man secure in his position, hiding his treachery behind genuine competence — his medical knowledge was real, which made his betrayal all the more effective. Kvothe recognized the poisoning and exposed him, earning the Maer's gratitude and Caudicus's flight from Severen. His motives remain unclear — whether he acted on his own ambition or at someone else's direction is an open question.

Appearance

Well-dressed and well-spoken, with the polished manner of an arcanist who has made himself indispensable to a powerful patron. His features are pleasant and forgettable — the face of a man who has cultivated trustworthiness as a professional skill.
