Arliden

Character from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

Kvothe's father — a master musician and troupe leader whose curiosity about a forbidden song called the Chandrian down upon everyone he loved.

Arliden was the leader of an Edema Ruh troupe and one of the finest musicians of his generation — a man who could silence a room with a single chord and make hardened travelers weep with a ballad. He spoke with the easy wit and verbal precision that his son inherited, and he loved his wife and his boy with a fierce, uncomplicated joy that makes his death all the more devastating. He was researching a song about Lanre and the Chandrian, piecing together forbidden history from fragments and folklore, and he did not stop when he should have. His curiosity — the same quality that makes Kvothe brilliant and reckless — brought the Chandrian to his troupe's fire. He died with his lute nearby and his song unfinished.

Appearance

Red-haired like his son, with the lean build and expressive hands of a lifelong performer. His face carried the same sharp intelligence that marks Kvothe, softened by a warmth and humor that came from years of living well among people he loved. He moved with a performer's awareness of space and audience.
