Tiraas

Location from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

The Imperial capital — a sprawling metropolis of temples, government buildings, and commercial districts where every power faction on the continent maintains a presence and plays the great game of politics.

Tiraas is power made physical. Every building is a statement — the temples assert divine authority, the Palace asserts Imperial authority, and the merchant houses assert the authority of gold. Walking through the city is walking through a political argument expressed in architecture. The city runs on a controlled tension between the Crown, the Church, the guilds, and the cults. Everyone spies on everyone. The Thieves' Guild operates openly (theft as divine service gets legal accommodation). The Black Wreath operates covertly. The Silver Legions patrol in force. It's the most civilized and most dangerous city on the continent, and the civilized part makes the dangerous part worse. At street level, Tiraas is a city of commerce and diversity — Punaji traders, Narisian diplomats, frontier adventurers, and Imperial bureaucrats all share the same taverns. The food is excellent. The politics are lethal.

Appearance

A vast city of stone and magic, built in layers over centuries of expansion. Grand temples to each Pantheon god line the sacred boulevard. The Imperial Palace dominates the skyline. The Wide Spot is the commercial heart — markets, banks, theaters, and the less reputable establishments that spring up where money concentrates. Rail lines converge on the central station. Enchanted streetlights glow at night.
