Location from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb
A frontier town perched on a mesa at the edge of the Golden Sea — the last outpost of civilization before the wilderness, and the unlikely home of the world's most dangerous university.
Last Rock smells like dust, sage, and the ozone tang of magical discharge from the University above. It's simultaneously a sleepy frontier town and a place where gods have manifested on Main Street. The locals have developed an unflappable calm about magical incidents the way people in flood zones develop opinions about sandbags. The town exists because the University exists — it provides food, lodging, and entertainment for students and faculty, and in return gets the protection of Tellwyrn's wards and the economic activity of a magical institution. The Rail connects it to Tiraas, but the journey takes long enough that Last Rock feels genuinely remote. At night, the desert cold comes fast and the stars are impossibly clear. Coyotes howl in the Golden Sea. The University glows faintly on the cliff above, its wards humming at frequencies just below hearing.
A cluster of sun-bleached wooden buildings clinging to a flat-topped mesa, the kind of town that looks like it was built to be temporary and then forgot to leave. Main street runs straight from the Rail depot to the university gates. The Ale & Wenches saloon, a general store, a Bank of Tiraas branch, a multi-faith temple, and a sheriff's office define the commercial district. The Golden Sea stretches to every horizon — flat, golden grassland shimmering with heat haze.
