Item from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb
Artifacts of the goddess Verniselle — five magical devices that duplicate their contents, each one a potential economic revolution or catastrophe depending on who controls it.
The Vernis Vaults are the kind of artifact that starts wars. Each one can duplicate physical objects placed inside it — materials, goods, currency. The economic implications are staggering and the political implications are worse. Five exist; their locations are carefully guarded secrets. Tellwyrn has one in her office at the University, which she uses with characteristic pragmatism and which nobody is foolish enough to try stealing from her. The existence of the vaults is widely known; their locations are not. Finding one is the kind of quest that attracts the wrong kind of attention.
Ornate metallic boxes roughly the size of a large chest, covered in divine script and mechanical components that shouldn't work together but do. Each vault has a slightly different design reflecting the era it was recovered. When active, they hum with a resonance that makes nearby objects vibrate sympathetically.
