Zanzayed the Blue

Character from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

An ancient blue dragon turned socialite — one of the last of his kind, who traded the traditional draconic lifestyle of hoarding and terrorizing for cocktail parties and political gossip.

Zanzayed approaches the modern world with the bemused enthusiasm of someone who remembers when most of it was forest. He's adapted to civilization with more grace than most dragons — he attends social events, maintains a network of contacts across multiple power structures, and treats the entire mortal political landscape as entertainment. He's old enough to have known Tellwyrn before she was respectable (or at least before she was a professor), and their relationship is a centuries-long argument that neither wants to win because winning would end it. He's genuinely dangerous — blue dragons are apex predators — but he hasn't needed to be dangerous in a long time, and he's out of practice in the way that only an immortal can afford to be.

Appearance

In human form: a striking, dark-haired man with an aristocratic bearing and clothes that cost more than most people's houses. Blue eyes with vertical pupils if you look closely. In true form: an enormous blue dragon with scales that shimmer like sapphires, wings that darken the sky, and a sardonic expression that translates across species.
