Trissiny Avelea

Character from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

The Hand of Avei — a paladin raised in an orphanage who arrived at university carrying a goddess's sword and a worldview about to shatter against the messy reality of people who don't fit neatly into right and wrong.

Trissiny speaks with the certainty of someone who was taught that the world has clear moral categories. She's formal, earnest, and painfully sincere — she says 'ma'am' and 'sir' without irony. Her instinct when confronted with a problem is to identify the evil and confront it directly, which works beautifully in battle and terribly in social situations. Her rigidity is both her strength and her flaw. She was raised by the Sisters of Avei in near-total isolation from the complexity of the real world, and her first year at University is a sustained collision between her binary morality and classmates who are demons, thieves, and creatures that don't fit her categories. She grows by cracking, not by bending — each time her worldview breaks, she rebuilds it broader. She is fiercely protective of women and children, suspicious of men by training, and genuinely confused by moral ambiguity. Under pressure she reaches for her sword first and diplomacy second, but she's learning — slowly and painfully — that Avei's justice might be more nuanced than the version she was taught.

Appearance

Tall and athletic with golden-blonde hair worn in a practical braid. Fair-skinned, strong-jawed, carries herself with military bearing drilled into her since childhood. Wears silver plate armor bearing Avei's eagle insignia when on duty, simple soldier's clothing otherwise. Her shield gleams with divine light when activated. Moves like someone trained to fight before she learned to dance.
