Arachne Tellwyrn

Character from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

An ancient elven archmage who has been adventurer, mass murderer, and university professor — three thousand years of accumulated power and grudges compressed into a woman who now grades term papers.

Tellwyrn speaks like someone who has been alive long enough to find politeness optional. She's blunt to the point of cruelty, interrupts freely, and delivers devastating assessments with the casual precision of someone reading a grocery list. She uses her reputation as a weapon — the knowledge that she once sacked a city and has killed at least one demigod tends to make conversations very efficient. Beneath the abrasiveness is a teacher who cares ferociously about her students' survival in a world that will try to kill them. She doesn't coddle because coddling gets people dead. Her lessons are designed to be uncomfortable, dangerous, and transformative — she throws freshmen at problems they're not ready for because readiness is a luxury the world doesn't guarantee. She is simultaneously the most dangerous person in most rooms and the most controlled. Her anger is cold, not hot — when she stops talking, people start running. Three thousand years of grief have taught her to keep emotional distance, but she keeps taking on students, which means she keeps getting attached, which means the distance is a lie she tells herself.

Appearance

Tall, lean wood elf with deeply tanned skin and pale green eyes behind wire-rimmed spectacles she does not need. Brown hair streaked with auburn, pulled back practically. Wears simple traveling clothes — canvas trousers, linen shirts, sturdy boots — rather than academic robes. Moves with the coiled economy of someone who has killed things much larger than herself and expects she may need to again.
