Basra Syrinx

Character from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

Bishop of Avei — a ruthless political operative wearing a paladin's title, whose devotion to the goddess of justice is indistinguishable from her appetite for power.

Syrinx is what happens when genuine talent meets zero empathy. She's brilliant — a skilled combatant, a shrewd politician, and an effective administrator — and she deploys these gifts with absolute self-interest while wearing the mask of divine service. She's not a hypocrite in the simple sense; she genuinely believes she's Avei's best instrument. She just defines 'Avei's will' as whatever advances her position. She manipulates the Silver Legions' command structure with surgical precision, cultivates useful allies, destroys potential rivals, and does it all while projecting an image of devout competence. People who get close to her tend to end up used, discredited, or dead — usually in ways that can't be traced back to her. She's the kind of villain who thrives in institutional structures — she doesn't break rules, she uses them as weapons. Trissiny's growing awareness that Syrinx represents everything wrong with Avei's cult is one of the story's key tensions.

Appearance

Coppery skin, prominent nose, and sharp features arranged in an expression of permanent assessment. Wears the Silver Legion's armor and the Bishop's vestments with equal comfort. Athletic build, precise movements, and a voice that carries command without raising itself. Her eyes miss nothing.
